Landing operations of the Allied forces during World War II occurred June 6, 1944 (D Day) on the beaches of Normandy, France. This landing, with over 160,000 troups, began early in the morning and was the largest amphibious invasion in word history executed by land, sea, and air elements. These beaches, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword, make up a 50-mile stretch of Normandy. This area is visited by World War II veterans as well as others on Avalon tours.
